The Tiguan R 2021 is a compact SUV that provides plenty of room and versatility in comparison to smaller mid-size vehicles.

It's an ideal choice for long road trips, thanks to its comfortable seats, soundproof cabin and superior steering feel. Though its highway ride may be firmer than some small SUVs, it still makes a great road-trip companion.


VW's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generates 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, enabling the Tiguan to accelerate quickly. Plus, its stop-start system works flawlessly as well.

Front-wheel drive vehicles with the EPA rating of 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway achieve an EPA-rated fuel economy of 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway; those equipped with 4MOTION all-wheel drive enjoy even better numbers at 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Volkswagen hasn't deviated too much from their previous model's exterior design, but there are a few minor adjustments for 2021. The base S and mid-range SE receive new 17" wheel designs while the top-spec SEL Premium gets standard adaptive cruise control as standard equipment.
Interior/Climate Comfort

No matter which trim level you select, the Tiguan's interior feels understated and thoughtfully laid out. It runs Volkswagen's MIB3 user interface on an 8-inch touchscreen which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring as well as other capabilities like USB ports and wireless device charging.


The Tiguan is equipped with a rearview camera, adaptive braking, lane departure warning with auto-braking, and autonomous emergency braking. Plus it's one of the few compact SUVs in its class to feature a fold-down third row seat - ideal if you need to transport more than five adults.
