Hog island Type A freighter

The Hog Islander Type A was a class of freighter ships that emerged as a significant part of the United States' emergency shipbuilding program during World War I. Named after the Hog Island shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they were constructed, these ships were designed to address the critical shortage of cargo ships needed to support the Allied war effort and to replace vessels sunk by German U-boats.
