Big Ben London (PBR)
The Big Ben, officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, is one of London's most iconic landmarks. Situated at the northern end of the Palace of Westminster, it is renowned for its architectural grandeur and historical significance, symbolizing both British heritage and governance.
The tower stands at an impressive height of 96 meters (316 feet) and features a Gothic Revival architectural style. Constructed primarily from limestone, the structure showcases intricate detailing, including pointed arches, ornate carvings, and decorative pinnacles. Each corner of the tower is accentuated by slender spires, which enhance its vertical emphasis and regal appearance.
At the heart of the tower lies the Great Clock, an engineering marvel of its time. The clock faces are 7 meters (23 feet) in diameter and consist of an iron framework filled with opal glass. Each face is adorned with Roman numerals and gilded detailing, framed by an intricate design resembling lacework. The hands of the clock are crafted from polished steel, with the minute hand measuring 4.3 meters (14 feet) in length.
The Great Bell, popularly known as Big Ben, weighs approximately 13.7 tons and produces a distinctive chime heard across central London. The bell is housed in a belfry near the top of the tower, accompanied by smaller bells that mark the quarter-hours. The unique sound of Big Ben's chime has become synonymous with London’s identity.
The tower's interior includes a spiral staircase with over 300 steps, leading to the clock mechanism and the bell chamber. The clock mechanism, designed by Edward John Dent, operates with remarkable precision and incorporates a gravity escapement system to regulate timekeeping.
