What is PICO-8?
PICO-8 is both a virtual machine and a game engine. In other words, it is a fantasy game console that mimics the graphics (and sound) capabilities of 8-bit systems from the 1980s.
Read on to find out what this thing is all about!
PICO-8 - what is it?
PICO-8 is, as mentioned above, an emulator of a defunct 80's game console combined with a cartridge development environment for that console. It was a very powerful console... Its resolution was as high as 128x128, it had 16 colors and as much as 32 KB of memory!
As for the development environment, it included, for example, a code editor (the code was written in a subset of Lua - yes, it was not the best option for titles, but the developers' decision was understandable, as it was a kind of performance and striving for individuality), a graphics editor (pixel graphics, of course), a music editor, and a sound effects editor.
PICO-8 is compatible to all major platforms. Windows, Linux, Mac - enjoy it on whatever you want. And just in case you fall in love with this project, you can always buy a PocketChip. This is a minicomputer based on a stripped-down version of Debian, on which PICO-8 runs.
Finished games and programs can be added to bbs, at the same time they are converted to HTML-5 and appear on the site.
Of course you can also browse the bbs sections on PICO-8 itself.
By the way, we almost forgot to mention the name of the original site. You can read about PICO-8 here: https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php.
And if you need something more detailed, you can find it on our site. Our catalog is full of various 2D and 3D assets for Unity (link) and Unreal Engine (link) for every taste and color.
They are suitable for both game development and architectural projects. To be more precise, these are models, textures, materials, add-ons, resources for DAZ 3D and Poser, PBRs, and even manuals that will explain to you certain aspects of working with professional tools.
All of this is completely free and without registration.
