Ara macao (PBR)

The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is an impressive parrot native to Central and South America that sports vibrant red, yellow and blue feathers. It usually lives in humid evergreen forests but was once found throughout its range; however habitat destruction and capture for pet parrot trade have caused many populations to disappear.
Ara macao belongs to the Arini tribe of Neotropical parrots, with eight extant species and at least two hypothetical extinct ones. This highly adaptable bird can live in a variety of habitats from humid rainforest to open woodland to savanna.
Generally, they prefer areas with dense foliage as this provides protection from predators and allows them to make their nests in tree hollows. Their nests are usually camouflaged so as not to be noticed by humans.
Predators such as monkeys, toucans and snakes often target macaws due to their remarkable ability to hide. Furthermore, they build their nests high up in trees which makes it nearly impossible for predators to get at them.
