Haruhi Suzumiya's personality can be described as "overpowering", with her mannerisms often being described as guile, intimidation, blackmail or sheer charisma. Her character is characterized by rapid shifts in emotions and she rarely stays the same.

Her name derives from the Japanese words "haru" (distant) and "suzumiya" (cool). It can be translated to mean either "princess, young lady of noble birth" or "young woman of high status".

She typically dresses her long, flowing locks up in various fashions that reach to her waist. Additionally, she sports an orange-yellow headband with ribbons embellishments.

She has become known for her overprotective nature towards senior classmate and best friend Yuki Nagato. When it seemed like Nagato might get sick, she insisted on carrying her, and even stood up for Literature Club against the Student Council President!

Her other club members include laconic bibliophile Mikuru Asahina, unflappable transfer student Itsuki Koizumi and Michiru Yamamura. Each one has been sent by an unknown organization to observe Haruhi's reality warping powers and protect her from harm.

Kyon is one of her closest friends and she acts as his "Moe Moe Desu Desu," or go-to person when making fun of him. Michiru also counts on her for protection when faced with challenges such as protecting her from the Student Council president during Snow Mountain Syndrome or ordering the SOS Brigade to visit her apartment daily when feeling ill.
