Cleopatra VII Philopator (PBR)

Cleopatra VII Philopator was the last ruler of Egypt from the Ptolemaic dynasty. Her family had ruled Egypt for generations, and in 69 BC she assumed control over an empire encompassing all of ancient Egypt, Cyprus and modern-day Libya.
Her family was of Macedonian descent and her ancestry could be traced back to Ptolemy I Soter, a Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great. Her mother was an Egyptian princess, while her father was an influential king in Egypt.
She was born and raised in Alexandria, where she studied Greek language and arts. As a gifted student, her intelligence and proficiency with many languages made her stand out; furthermore, she was an accomplished writer and poet as well.
Cleopatra was co-ruler of Egypt with her two brothers/husbands, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, when her father passed away. However, in 48 bce she was overthrown by Pothinus and other members of the court in what is believed to have been an act of revenge.
After Caesar's death, she joined Mark Antony and produced twin sons: Alexander Helios and Ptolemy Philadelphus. Unfortunately, her relationship with Antony ended with Antony's assassination in 41 bce, leading Cleopatra to commit suicide by swallowing an asp.
Cleopatra's reign was short, but she left an indelible mark on history. Her love affair with Julius Caesar (100-44 bce) is immortalized in Roman literature and art, while her marriage to Mark Antony (81-30 bce) cemented him as Caesar's heir. Her death at Philippi in 42 bce allowed Octavian to become Roman emperor; her steles in Philae Temple at Alexandria carry her name in a cartouche - something reserved for Egyptian pharaohs.
