The Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is one of the most important fruits grown in the Middle East and North Africa. It has been used for traditional medicine and also is an important food source. It is rich in dietary fiber, sugar, protein, vitamins, minerals, and flavonoid and phenolic compounds.

Despite its many benefits, the date palm has faced some difficulties, and is facing a declining commercial production in most of its native areas. Most of the old plantations are now abandoned and forest fires destroy a large number of mature palms.

Well-draining soil is the most important factor in growing the date palm. It does well in sandy or loamy soils and can tolerate moderate amounts of salt. However, a high concentration of salt can make it hard for the date palm to survive in coastal areas and near freshwater estuaries.
