The Lockheed martin F-35 Lightning II is a cutting-edge fighter jet with multirole capabilities. It is one of the world's most advanced aircraft, capable of performing strike, interdiction and suppression missions as well as reconnaissance and air-to-air refueling missions.

The F-35 aircraft is offered in three variants: the multi-role F-35A, short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B, and carrier-capable F-35C. The UK has been an integral partner on this programme, supplying parts and expertise for the STOVL variant that is now operational aboard Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier.

Pratt & Whitney F135 engine powers this powerful turbofan, creating the world's most powerful afterburning turbofan ever developed. There are two versions of this engine: conventional for F-35A and C, as well as a modified multi-cycle version for the STOVL version (STOVB).

This plane is outfitted with 17 advanced weapon systems, an impressive radar and enhanced electronic warfare capability. Additionally, its cockpit layout boasts a sophisticated single-color touchscreen "panoramic" display for inputs from the plane's electronic systems as well as various secondary flight displays.

The F-35's integrated core processor (ICP) runs flight control software and acts as a central "brain" for the aircraft, controlling all systems and displays. It links to subsystems via triple redundant MILSTD 1394B high-speed serial bus network. This system can handle data streams from numerous sources while enabling integration with other aircraft and systems as well as ground-based sensors.
