Mercedes G-Class 6x6 (PBR)

The G-Wagen is an off-roader designed originally as a military vehicle. Nowadays it can be purchased as a luxurious SUV and sales have seen a resurgence since its introduction into the American market in 2002.
The main technical highlight of the G-Wagen is its portal axles, providing higher ground clearance and enhanced off-road capability. All six driven wheels feature central tyre inflation system, while the transfer case features an off-road low range ratio.
On a weeklong test drive tour at Magna Steyr's plant in Graz, Austria, we experienced firsthand its impressive engineering. Not only are its portal axles custom designed for each truck, but it also features five differential locks and an onboard tyre inflation control system that allows 37" tires to be quickly inflated while on the move.
It also features a dual-transfer case that provides full-time four-wheel drive, with the front axle driven via power takeoff that is simultaneously locked with the second transfer case. This results in a permanent torque split of 31/42/27 front to rear, similar to AMG 4Matic systems found on E-Class and S-Class vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz produces the G-Wagen at their Steyr factory in Graz, Austria and claims that it is one of their best sellers. To meet demand, 1500 people work at the plant; plans are underway to expand production. In 2012, G-Wagen sales reached their highest ever full year total ever; no doubt due to AMG-powered 6x6s' renewed appeal.
