Why do we think Metasequoia is better than 3ds Max
Metasequoia and 3ds Max are both excellent programs, but we believe that Metasequoia has a slight advantage.
Its versatility and ease of use make it a great choice for designers and artists alike.
This program allows you to create a wide variety of models from polygons and save them in popular formats such as OBJ, STL, FBX, LWO, DXF, 3DS, and MQO.
The program has three modes of operation:
- Beginner is ideal for those who are new to 3D programs. It features large colored buttons that clearly indicate their functions, and a shortened list of functions to avoid confusion.
- String is a mode for advanced users. This tool provides a wide range of functions for modeling, including a convenient mode for creating a low-polygonal base with subsequent division for puppet deformation and rigging.
- Mapping - a mode for creating and editing unwrapping. Although this mode is less popular due to occasional issues with its functionality. Overall, the tool is well-suited for working with low-polygonal objects.
What else is possible with Metasequoia?
Besides the obvious (i.e. creating 3D models from primitives), Metasequoia can also do the following things.
Painting and texturing
You can work with brushes or gradients. There is also a UV-mapping function. As for textures, diffuse, normal, specular and many more are supported.
Rendering and exporting
You can render with different display modes. This can be done either with pre-installed tools or through external plugins.
MqoToon, Pov-Ray, etc. - you name it.
Animating
You can create animations using storyboards and bone interactions. It is exported here in formats like BVH, MMD, etc.
All in all, the program perfectly handles the whole list of tasks that can be assigned to it in this niche. We cannot fail to mention the abundance of hotkey settings. You can literally bind everything the way you want. Yes, this feature is available in many other programs, but here it is implemented more conveniently. It should also be said that the preview works very stably here - you can expect no visual bugs, and the result is much more predictable and adequate.
Cons?
Metasequoia has them, but they are quite minor.
For example, there is a completely free version (metasequoia LE 30), but with less functionality. This means that you have to spend some money to use the program without limitations. The second point is that you can only import and export content if you have an active license.
Actually, you have to buy Metasequoia anyway.
But there is a little trick. You can get free access for thirty days. All you have to do is go through the registration process.
What you don't have to go through the registration process for is to download materials from our site. We have an impressive library of different strains. For every taste and color. For every game engine or architectural idea. These include 2D and 3D objects, props, textures, materials and much more for Unity & Unreal Engine.
If you are an active user of DAZ 3D or Poser (or both), you will also find something to devour (go link). Namely: 3D-models of characters, creatures, props, environments, clothing, poses, accessories, hairstyles, bundles and other materials for Genesis 8, 8.1, 9 Male & Female.
All this is 100% free and, as we said, without registration.
And yeah, although we said that Metasequoia can handle the whole list of tasks, some of the solutions are not very comfortable. For example, it is sometimes difficult to rotate an object because the camera gets stuck and starts moving strangely. But this is not a big problem, really.
And finally, someone might be confused by the fact that Metasequoia is a utility for the Japanese market with some nuances that manifest themselves, for example, in the unusual location of some functions. And sometimes not the most obvious way to access them.
3ds Max is easier in this respect (for obvious reasons), but loses out to Metasequoia in other respects.
Good luck!
