Spitfire Hf mk VII

The Supermarine Spitfire Hf mk VII was a variant designed for high altitude fighter duties. It featured a pressurised cabin and extended span wings initially, powered by an intercooled two speed Merlin engine. From February 1943 onwards, new production aircraft began receiving Merlin 64 engines as the most common engine option on Spitfire VIIs.
On June 26th 1941, the Royal Navy sent out their first prototype Spitfire Mk VB aircraft for counteracting German bombers operating at high altitudes. These variants were all based on the Spitfire Mk VB with various modifications and equipped with two 20mm Hispano cannons plus either one 500lb bomb or two 250lb bombs on each wing; their mission: to provide protection from these aircraft while they fought off German attacks from above.
One modification made to the Spitfire Mk VB was the addition of an arrestor hook and folding wings, which were first fitted to an Mk VB in January 1942 and soon after were followed by catapult spools.
The Mk VIII was an updated version of the Mk VII without a pressurised cabin, intended to become the main production model of the Spitfire. At 25,000 feet, its top speed was 408 mph (401 mph for LF Mk VIII and 416 mph for HF Mk VIII), with a service ceiling of 43,000 feet.
