F-4J Fantom (PBR)

McDonnell Douglas' F-4J Fantom is one of the most iconic fighter aircraft ever created. Built in the 1960s, it set the standard for heavy supersonic interceptors around the world and continues to serve today with various air forces around the world. More than 5,000 Phantoms were produced over its career; hundreds remain operational today with various air forces around the world.
Defense Secretary Robert McNamara requested a standard jet fighter for all branches of the United States military. The Navy desired an interceptor, while the Air Force desired a ground attack fighter that could also carry bombs.
The F-4J was the top-of-the-line variant for the Navy, capable of carrying 18,000 pounds of weapons on nine external hardpoints (including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles and various bombs). This aircraft could reach speeds well over Mach 2 and fly at very low altitudes.
Due to its large size, it is vulnerable to being hit by incoming gunfire and lack of armour from enemy fighters. As there are only a few countermeasures available, it's best not to take too many chances in close air combat.
The F-4J features a unique double-barrel 20 mm Mk 11 revolver cannon. While this is better than the Vulcans found on F-4C and British models, its rate of fire still suffers significantly. Therefore, in most cases it's best to leave the gunpods at home and instead utilize wing pylon dispensers for Sparrows or Sidewinders on fuselage pylons.
