BM-27 (PBR)

The BM-27 Uragan (Hurricane) is a Russian multiple launch rocket system. It entered service in the Soviet Army in 1975 and has since been exported worldwide.
The Uragan MLRS is designed to defeat troops and combat materiel in concentrated areas, and remotely lay anti-tank area denial mines in a battle zone at distances between 10km and 35km. It is also designed to fire a high-explosive cluster munition in an attack against strategic targets.
A single BM-27 Uragan can fire a total of 16 220mm rockets. This allows it to deliver a high volume of fire, and a large range. The rockets can be fired at a rate of one per second.
BM-27 Uragan is powered by two ZiL-375 petrol engines that develop 180 hp each. They drive the 8x8 heavy mobility vehicle chassis and are mated to a 5-speed gearbox.
This was a highly complex design that required special synchronizers to control all the mechanisms. The reloading process was time consuming, and the launcher had to be traversed in order for the new rockets to be loaded into the tube.
The BM-27 Uragan is a relatively old artillery system that has seen considerable use in the war between Ukraine and Russia, and will likely be in use for years to come. It is possible that the Ukrainian military will phase out its use of the Uragan after active fighting winds down between Ukraine and Russia, as Soviet-legacy artillery munitions become increasingly difficult to acquire.
