Warhorse (PBR)

World War II saw many horses serving in the military. The term "old war horse" originally applied to a military charger but has come to refer to any animal that has served in the armed forces. During this conflict, horses were often displaced or killed during battle and their suffering made public through news articles and pamphlets.
In the 1930s, Dorothy Brooke was living in Egypt when she came upon a group of neglected horses. She wrote a letter to the newspaper and was so moved by what she saw that she resolved to help these animals find relief.
Her expertise in equine welfare enabled her to make a lasting impact. She founded the Old War Horse Memorial Hospital in Cairo, which today stands as one of the world's foremost equine welfare charities.
World War II saw horses being used as observation posts for artillery and air attacks, as well as for transportation purposes; carrying ammunition and supplies to the front line. Some even became stuck in mud while fighting, serving as barriers against artillery fire. Estimates vary on how many horses were involved in combat during this conflict, though one reliable source estimates 3.5 million died from their efforts.
