Medieval Horse (PBR)

When we think of the medieval horse, we often envision a tall, powerful mount mounted by an armor-clad knight in battle. Yet this idealized image does not quite capture the reality of horses in the Middle Ages - they were much more varied.
Archaeologists and historians from five English universities have discovered that medieval warhorses were often quite small, measuring no more than 14.2 hands high (about 1.44m) - no larger than a pony by modern standards.
The study, published in Nature Communications, utilized an extensive dataset of horse bones from 171 archaeological sites in England. It focused on an analysis of long bones from horse skeletons and their products from AD 300 to 1650.
With the horse becoming increasingly important to society, people began classifying horses according to their purpose and physical attributes. This resulted in unique types of horse developing that no modern equivalent can match.
