Smith and Wesson Model No3 Schofield Patent Revolver (PBR)

In 1869, Smith & Wesson released the Model No3 Schofield Patent Revolver. It was the first Army standard breech loading single action revolver. The US Military quickly adopted this weapon due to its superior load/reload time and ammunition capacity compared with earlier revolver models.
Major George W. Schofield had already identified and patented improvements to the Smith & Wesson No3 revolver design in 1875 that the Army found superior to those made with 1860 Colt percussion revolvers. These changes included its cylinder, ejector, barrel, grip, magazine - everything!
The hammer cocks in three positions, the first being a touch and feel rearward position and the second being a quarter cock when the cylinder is spun freely. Uberti has added an internal hammer block safety to their reproductions of the No3.
This sample is an exceptional example of a "frontier used" 1st Model Schofield, featuring its original blued finish. It has developed an attractive patina and some lovely aged walnut grips.
This rare and scarce US martial handgun is in excellent condition. These guns saw extensive service during the 4th, 9th & 10th US Cavalry's missions on the frontier and are rarely found with their original blued finish intact.
In addition to the Indian Wars, this gun may also have seen use in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and possibly during Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection or First World War. This gun became a favorite with lawmen and outlaws of the Wild West; famous citizens such as Buffalo Bill and Jesse James even purchased one!
