Grenade Mk II (PBR)

Developed in the United States during World War I, the Grenade Mk II hand grenade became widely used by American soldiers. It replaced the unsuccessful Mk 1 grenade which had been employed previously.
The Mk II grenade was the most common type of munition carried by US soldiers during World War I. 44 million of them were produced, and 21 million made their way overseas with American forces.
This grenade was an improved version of the Mk 1. It featured a spherical body, but with grooved surface divided into 40 knobs in five rows of eight columns to increase fragmentation.
It also had a wooden plug screwed into the fuze hole, which sank into the body when removed. As such, an empty cavity remained within the explosive for use as a detonator.
As such, the Mk II was not as effective in fragmentation as other hand grenades and could break into large chunks that caused uneven injury patterns. Therefore, it wasn't recommended for use during a firefight.
It was primarily used as a training grenade. It lacked an explosive charge but did include a practice charge, which was placed inside a tube with a chipboard disc at the bottom.
