Anti-personnel mine PON-2 (PBR)
The PON-2 is a Soviet-designed anti-personnel mine intended for use against infantry. It is a pressure-activated device, compact and lightweight, making it easy to deploy in various terrains and tactical scenarios.
The PON-2 has a simple cylindrical shape, often made of a combination of metal and plastic to reduce weight and production costs. It measures approximately 7-10 cm in diameter and stands about 5-6 cm tall. Its weight is typically around 200-300 grams, making it easily portable by infantry forces.
The activation mechanism of the PON-2 relies on pressure applied directly to the top of the mine. When a person steps on it, the pressure collapses a mechanical or chemical safety mechanism, causing the mine to detonate. The explosive charge inside is designed to create lethal fragmentation, with an effective radius of up to 10-15 meters. The fragmentation casing ensures maximum damage to personnel within the immediate vicinity.
The PON-2 was developed with simplicity and effectiveness in mind, often deployed in large numbers to create minefields that deny access to enemy forces or channel their movement. It is resistant to environmental factors such as water and temperature variations, which ensures reliable performance over extended periods.
As with many anti-personnel mines, the PON-2 poses significant post-conflict risks. Its small size and inconspicuous appearance make it difficult to detect, contributing to the ongoing humanitarian issue of unexploded mines in former combat zones.
