Russian Grenade RGD33

The RGD-33 grenade, developed in 1933 in the Soviet Union, served as a dual-purpose stick grenade widely used by Soviet forces during World War II. Created by designer M.G. Dyakonov, this grenade could be configured as an offensive or defensive weapon. When used offensively, it produced around 2,000 small fragments with a lethal radius of 5–10 meters. In its defensive configuration, an attachable metal fragmentation sleeve added about 400 larger fragments, increasing the grenade’s weight and expanding the lethal range to 10–15 meters.
Weighing approximately 500 grams (or 750 grams with the sleeve), the RGD-33 relied on a time-delay fuse, giving the thrower 4–5 seconds to position the grenade. The design featured a handle for leverage, making it throwable up to about 40 meters. Despite its versatility, the grenade’s complex production requirements eventually led to its replacement by simpler models like the RG-42 in 1942. Its influence persisted, however, as many were captured by Nazi forces and repurposed for German troops during the war.
