Cruise missile Storm Shadow SCALP EG (PBR)

The Storm Shadow, also known as the SCALP EG (Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée - Emploi Général), is a long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed collaboratively by the United Kingdom and France. Designed for precision strikes against high-value, heavily defended targets, the missile exemplifies advanced stealth and guidance technology.
The Storm Shadow measures approximately 5.1 meters in length and weighs about 1,300 kilograms. Its aerodynamic design includes a rectangular cross-section and folding wings for optimal performance during flight. The missile is powered by a turbojet engine, allowing it to achieve a range exceeding 560 kilometers, depending on flight profile and conditions.
Equipped with a sophisticated guidance system, the Storm Shadow uses a combination of inertial navigation, GPS, terrain-following radar, and an infrared imaging seeker. This ensures exceptional accuracy, even against well-camouflaged or hardened targets. A unique feature is its ability to execute low-altitude, terrain-hugging flight to avoid radar detection, enhancing survivability in hostile environments.
The warhead is a BROACH (Bomb Royal Ordnance Augmented Charge), a dual-stage explosive system optimized for penetrating and destroying reinforced structures such as bunkers. Upon impact, the missile’s warhead delivers a powerful delayed detonation, maximizing structural damage.
The missile can be deployed from a variety of aircraft, including the Tornado, Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Mirage 2000. Its modular design also allows integration with emerging platforms.
The Storm Shadow has seen operational use in several conflicts, notably in the Middle East, where its precision capabilities have been used to neutralize critical infrastructure and strategic assets while minimizing collateral damage. Its advanced technology and combat effectiveness make it one of the most sophisticated cruise missiles in modern arsenals.
