Soviet anti-tank blast landmine TM-62M (PBR)

The TM-62M is a Soviet-designed anti-tank blast landmine, widely used by military forces since its introduction during the mid-20th century. Known for its simplicity and effectiveness, the TM-62M is part of the TM-62 series of landmines and remains in service with various armed forces around the world.
The mine has a disc-shaped body constructed from either metal, plastic, or bakelite, depending on the variant. The TM-62M specifically features a steel casing, which provides durability and makes it resistant to environmental conditions. The mine is approximately 320 millimeters in diameter and 120 millimeters in height, weighing around 9.5 kilograms. Its explosive content, typically TNT or an equivalent, constitutes about 7.5 kilograms of its total weight.
At the center of the mine is a pressure-activated fuze, such as the MVN-72, which detonates the mine when subjected to sufficient weight—usually in the range of 150-300 kilograms. This makes it highly effective against heavy vehicles, such as tanks and armored personnel carriers. The pressure plate on top distributes the force, ensuring reliable activation.
Deployment of the TM-62M is straightforward, as it can be laid manually or using mechanical mine-laying equipment. Its relatively low production cost and ease of deployment have contributed to its widespread use. Additionally, it can be fitted with a variety of fuzes, including delay and anti-handling devices, to increase its versatility and reduce the likelihood of removal by enemy forces.
When detonated, the mine creates a powerful blast, capable of destroying or severely damaging the tracks and undercarriage of most armored vehicles. This not only immobilizes the target but can also incapacitate the crew, depending on the vehicle's design and protection.
The TM-62M has been used extensively in various conflicts, reflecting its reliability and effectiveness. However, like all landmines, it poses long-term risks to civilians if not properly cleared after hostilities end. This has made it a subject of concern in the context of international efforts to regulate or ban landmines.
