In the 1930s, Alfa Romeo 8C became one of the world's most renowned sports cars due to its reliability, drive-ability and success in racing competitions. It also had a connection with legendary Italian driver Tazio Nuvolari who won numerous races on both motorcycles and cars alike--including Targa Florio in Sicily and Monza--as part of his legendary racing legacy.
Vittorio Jano designed and produced the 8C engine for Alfa Romeo from 1926 until 1939, which was used in various two-seater sports cars as well as some Monoposto Tipo B (P3) racers.
In 1933, the engine was increased to 2.6 litres, which enabled it to win both the 1931 Eireann Cup and 24 Hours of Le Mans. For 1934, however, this increased was made even larger to 2.9 litres.
The 8C marked the beginning of Alfa Romeo's racing success, setting up coach-builders such as Zagato, Touring and Castagna to build chassis for Alfa Romeo racecars.
