What is the 3MF file format and how can it be opened?

The 3MF file is a format used to create and print 3D models using various Windows applications:
- Microsoft 3D Builder;
- Microsoft Paint 3D;
- McNeel Rhino;
- PTC Creo;
- Ultimaker Cura;
- Dassault Systemes SolidWorks;
- Dassault Systemes CATIA.
3MF format contains a three-dimensional model that includes textures, meshes, materials, scale, etc.
Advantages of the format
Perhaps the most important advantage of the 3MF format is its readable XML (Extensible Markup Language) format, which allows you to store large amounts of information. For example, when working with 3D printers using SLS technology, all the information about the number of parts and their location in the workspace can be added to the same file so that the process can be accurately reproduced on the equipment. What's more, XML can be opened and the content manually edited.
Metadata integration is another key benefit of 3MF. Since this format can contain all the necessary information about 3D printing equipment and parameters, it reduces the dependency on proprietary slicers. It also provides the ability to fully control the process of building reference structures.
Finally, 3MF supports security protocols that allow you to limit the number of copies of products on individual 3D printers - a great help when you need to ensure reliable copyright protection.
Which is better: STL or 3MF?
Is 3MF better than the really classic STL we're all so used to? Yes, it has several advantages over it. First, 3MF files carry much more information, including device information, color and texture information for multi-jet prints, relative position in space, and much more. Second, despite the enormous amount of information they contain, 3MFs are still smaller than STL files.
But is it all that simple? Of course not.
There are two very important reasons why STL is still used, and in some places more often than 3MF. Just because:
- STL is a familiar file format for many users - people don't want to retrain themselves to work with other formats.
- 3D printers only support mesh-based files in slicers, which 3MF doesn't always provide.
