Cotoneaster Lucidus 6
This shrub thrives best in full sun to partial shade, but is quite adaptable to a range of growing conditions. They can tolerate most soil types and conditions including salt spray, dry weather conditions and cold temperatures.
Once you're ready to plant your cotoneasters, begin indoors in small pots filled with nutrient-rich compost mixture. Water them regularly and place in a sunny location until the roots have taken hold.
Use this hardy plant as a ground cover in areas where you need to control weeds. Look for varieties of cotoneaster with low-growing stems that arch and cascade over the ground - these striking stems will root wherever they touch the earth, creating dense colonies which can effectively choke out weeds.
Consider planting this hardy shrub as a border or hedge for its captivating summer flowers and vibrant winter berries. Bees and birds love these white blooms, while red berries ripen late in autumn - providing essential nectar when many other flowering plants have finished for the year.
Prostrate varieties make an ideal choice for planting against the side of a retaining wall, as their gracefully arching branches wrap around its contours. Alternatively, rock cotoneaster can be used as an over-arching ground cover in any spot that receives plenty of sun.
For ground cover, space these shrubs three to five feet apart. Hedging should be planted 6 to 10 feet apart. In their first season, these plants can tolerate drought conditions but require regular watering for optimal growth.
